Our Story
Hi! My name is Amy Mitchell, and I am the Founder of Anchor Her.
By the age of 19 I was a single mother, on government assistance, facing a 5-year prison sentence, and losing custody of my daughter, Mariah.
The night I was arrested and taken to jail I was terrified. I had burned all my bridges and I knew no one was coming to bond me out. Not only that, during my first phone call, my mother informed me that my daughter would be taken out of my custody and moved to another state. I was on my own, sick to my stomach at the thought of never seeing my daughter again.
At that time, I was not a person of faith. I believed there was a God, but I didn’t have a relationship with Him, and I wasn’t into religion. Let me tell you, the prospect of losing my daughter and spending five years in prison helped me find my faith, quick! I cried out to God in my cell, “God, let me out of here and I will do anything you ask!” The next morning, my miracle came: I was released from jail, and I made it to get my daughter before she was taken out of my custody. God showed up for me! I got probation instead of prison and I had my baby back.
Unfortunately, I still had some hard lessons to learn. At the age of 24, I had two kids, I was back on government assistance, and hanging with the wrong people. I was injured and taken to a hospital, then to Safe Home Domestic Violence Shelter. This was a pivotal point in my life. I was connected to a volunteer and through her guidance and compassion, my life changed. She came alongside me, walking out one step at a time. I got a job, I graduated transitional living, then got my own apartment. Each step, this woman cheered me on and helped me find the practical resources I needed for myself and my children. She gave me hope of a better life. I told her more than anything, I wanted to buy my own home, in a nice neighborhood where my children could go to nice schools. In the year 2000, I bought that first home, my children got into amazing schools, and I became a PTA mom. Can you believe it? Now I have an amazing life, amazing children and I get to work side by side with the daughter I almost lost. She is the co-founder of Anchor Her.
There is a lot more to the story, and it isn’t over yet, but one thing I do know is that I have seen God work ALL things together for my good (Romans 8:28). Every broken piece, every ounce of pain, He has used or is using for good. I am still not a religious person; I am a beautifully restored woman in love with my creator, my God, my redeemer Jesus Christ, He is my best friend.
I am here to tell you that no matter how far you have fallen, or how many bridges you have burned, there is still HOPE and you are not alone.
